Itinerary

Day 1: Reykjavík Arrival
Upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport you will be met by your professional guide and driver, who is an avid hunter himself. Your guide will help you clear your weapons through customs and then drive to Reykjavik. If you arrive late in the evening you will take a flight to Akureyri, a town on the north coast of Iceland. If you arrive early we will leave the city in our 4x4 vehicle after quick refreshments and a visit to a professional outfitter store, driving straight to our hunting grounds on the north coast of Iceland. We will stay in a nice hotel close to where we will be hunting the next day.

Day 2: First day of hunting
We will leave the hotel after a good breakfast when day breaks and head for the mountains, in search of  the Rock Ptarmigan. The birds move around a lot and the weather plays a big part in finding the Ptarmigans, so we have secured several locations where we can go hunting on that day. After a full day of hunting we will come down from the highlands and go for a swim in a geothermally heated swimming pool to relax and freshen up. We will then head to a nice restaurant for a good dinner before driving to our next location and checking into our hotel.

Day 3: Second day of hunting
We will start our day in similar fashion as the day before with a good and nutritious breakfast. We will then venture out into the beautiful Icelandic nature to look for the white birds in a new and exotic environment unlike anything you have ever seen. After the hunt we will head towards a unique nature bath for relaxation.  After a nice dinner we will head for our next location and check into our hotel.

Day 4: Third day of hunting
After breakfast we will meet up with an experienced local guide—one of the best guides available in that area and a very good friend of ours. He will be our guide for the next 2 days of our hunting trip, taking us to different locations in the area. After the hunt we will head back to our hotel, enjoy a nice dinner and relax with a glass of good wine.

Day 5: Fourth day of hunting
Same schedule as the day before but with the added possibility of duck hunting. We are allowed to hunt 7 species of ducks in Iceland: The Mallard, Teal, Widgeon, Tufted Duck, Long Tailed duck, the Scaup and the Red-Breasted Merganser. We also have the possibility to go sightseeing around the area and to take a look at Europe’s highest dam and Iceland’s largest ever construction, the enormous Kárahnjúkar project, currently well underway in the eastern highlands of Iceland.

Day 6: Return to Reykjavík
You have the option to sleep in and rest before we leave for the most northerly capital in the world, Reykjavík. When back in Reykjavík you will be checked in to your hotel; afterwards we will enjoy a gourmet dinner in one of Reykjavik’s renowned restaurants. After that you have the option to check out Reykjavík’s vibrant nightlife, with a seemingly endless choice of pubs, bars and discothèques. Your guide has good connections and will get you past long queues at the most popular places.

Day 7: Departure
Transportation to Keflavik Int’l airport; if you have an afternoon flight, you will have an option to stop at the amazing Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater spa for a unique outdoor bath and an in-water massage. This is a nice way to relax and unwind before your flight back home after an unforgettable hunting trip in Iceland.

Additional information

What you should bring

Warm and waterproof outdoor clothing and good thermal underwear. Hiking shoes (Gore-Tex). A 12-gauge shotgun, double barrel, pump action or semi-automatic with two/three shot capacity. Swimming gear.

What you can expect
Good hunting in the stunning Icelandic nature!  Excellent personal and friendly service from start to finish and an all round good experience.

What you need to know
A good level of fitness and stamina is required and is essential for this tour as considerable walking is included; the hunters will spend most of the day climbing on foot along steep hills and valleys and up high mountains in their search of the Ptarmigan. The terrain for these highland hunts, whether flat, hilly or mountainous, can make for extremely difficult walking for those not physically fit for the task. Hunting parties can expect to walk 3-10 miles each day while searching for birds. Persons attempting the Icelandic Rock Ptarmigan hunt should be in good condition physically and cardiovascularly. Persons with heart conditions, with debilitating hip, knee or ankle problems or similar disadvantages should not attempt participating in our hunting program. Shotgun hunting with multiple guns in any environment is inherently dangerous, and while hunting we are far from medical help, although your guide has good knowledge of first aid. A highland hunt for wild birds of any kind is not the place to learn basic gun safety and shooting etiquette. Persons who are inexperienced bird hunters, unless they have significant firearms handling experience in field situations, will not be allowed to participate in our hunting trips. Further interpretation of this condition or an explanation for its reasons will gladly be given if requested.

Daylight plays a big part in Ptarmigan hunting in October the daylight lasts from around 09.00 a.m. to 18.30 hrs or 6:30 p.m. but that changes fast and the days shorten quickly. In late November it is not possible to shoot much before 11.00 a.m., finishing at 16.30 hrs or 4:30 p.m. at the latest.

While there is no bag limit when hunting for birds in our beautiful island, Iceland Visitor kindly suggests that hunters show modesty when hunting Ptarmigans in Iceland, in the name of responsible and sustainable tourism. Iceland Visitor reserves the right to alter the tour if necessary due to bad weather conditions or other unexpected events.
