Car rental holiday packages offer an exciting way to travel around

- Travel with Freedom and Flexibility
Car rental packages are becoming an increasingly popular option among travellers in Iceland, and for a good reason. They allow far greater individual freedom and flexibility than scheduled group tours can, and as Self-Drive customers are effectively their own tour guides, these tours also offer a more intimate experience. Iceland Visitor’s pre-made itineraries take you through dramatic and varied scenery to places of great historical importance as well as some of Europe’s most stunning natural wonders. Our Self-Drive tours are an excellent option for individuals, couples, small groups and families who want to travel the country at their own pace and leisure. Due to limited availability of accommodation in the more remote areas of Iceland, we recommend booking with ample advance.
We can easily add days to any of the pre-made itineraries to include overnight or one-day visits to places such as the capital city Reykjavík, the volcanically active archipelago of the Westman Islands, the island Grímsey on the Arctic Circle or even Greenland and the Faeroe Islands. No additional service fee is charged for customising the itineraries in this manner.
Iceland Visitor offers a comprehensive selection of Self-Drive tours at very competitive prices. All advance planning is handled here by our travel consultants, and vouchers for all accommodation, car rental and requested activities, as well as detailed travel material, is delivered as per clients’ wishes. Upon arrival in Iceland, clients are met and greeted at Keflavik Int’l. airport by a company chauffeur who then provides transportation to hotels and guesthouses, with an optional stopover at the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa available during its opening hours. Later that day, or the day after if preferred, we offer an extensive information meeting with our Self-Drive specialists. They go over the itinerary, day by day, giving detailed information on places of accommodation, the route and attractions along the way as well as offering helpful tips and answering whatever questions clients may have.
All our self-drive tours include the following services:
Iceland Visitor offers various price categories for all self-drive tours depending on season, type of accommodation, number of passengers and type of car. These variables mean that there are well over 250 different price combinations available for every Self-Drive tour, ensuring that our clients can always find the trip best suited to their respective requirements and budgets.

About driving in Iceland
Iceland’s ring-road, highway #1, is the main road encircling Iceland; it is about 1350 km long and mostly paved. There are, however, minor gravel-surfaced sections in East Iceland where caution should be exercised. In Iceland, driving is done on the right side of the road, and there are no freeways. The general speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on gravel road areas and 90 km/h on paved roads unless otherwise posted. Conventional two-wheel-drive cars can easily traverse the ring-road and most routes through inhabited areas during summer.
The highland interior
Four-wheel-drive cars give added confidence and security in driving on remote roads and are essential for driving in the adventurous scenery of the highland interior. The interior roads are usually open from mid-June until early September, depending on weather conditions. Please note that driving outside of tracks is prohibited by law in Iceland to protect the fragile environment from further soil erosion.
Winter travel
Iceland is adventurous and enjoyable to explore in the off-season when the country is wearing its winter coat. During this season, the self-drive holidays are available at a cut-rate price, but it is advisable to travel by four-wheel-drive cars and special care should be taken.
