The Faroe Islands

A Worthwhile Journey

The Faroes (Sheep Islands) are a cluster of 18 islands situated roughly midway between Iceland and Norway. This makes a journey by sea an exciting opportunity to experience all three countries. The natural landscape is unique, greeting visitors by showing off the highest sea cliffs in Europe, looking a little less intimidating when veiled by the abundant green of spring and summer. The majority of the population lives on six of the larger islands, interconnected by under-ocean tunnels. The bird life of the Faroes is renowned. Many seabirds can be spotted, although natives take most pride in the Oystercatcher, or Tjaldur in Faroese (Haematopus ostralegus). It comes to the islands annually, in the beginning of spring—serving as a herald of summer. The Ólavsøka is a spectacle to see at the end of July, when the islanders gather in the capital of Tórshavn for a week-long celebration, including traditional singing and dancing. The food is best described as a set of acquired tastes, to be chased by a fair amount of drinks.
