Greenland Holiday

Greenland is the land of extremes. Visitors are greeted by deep fjords filled with drifting icebergs, hemmed in between high mountains of dramatic rock formations. With temperatures falling 50 degrees below Celsius at times, the Arctic climate on the earth’s largest island borders on the uninhabitable for man. Eirik the Red, the founding father of the Viking colony on the island’s western shores, encountered the then-unpopulated land around 982 A.D., and supposedly chose the name in the hope of attracting new settlers. Greenland might not be as green as he would have us believe, but it is neither in want of colour nor life. Despite the fact that 81% of the land is permanently covered by ice, constituting the planet’s biggest glacier, many animals have risen to the challenge of the harsh conditions, and made it their home. Travellers have the opportunity to see exotic Arctic natives in their natural environment, such as polar bears, musk oxen, walruses, polar foxes, polar hares and a variety of whales, seals and birds. The persistent masters of the land, the Inuit, are a hospitable people. You may want to take part in a dogsled race with the locals and take a trip yourself, accompanying the sturdy but good-natured Greenland Husky into the wilderness, boosting up on mattak, a local delicacy of whale skin and blubber. By the end of the day, whether it’s during the 24 hours of daylight, or the dark period of winter with Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) dancing across the sky, most will agree that Greenland repays manifold any effort it demands of travellers. It’s easy to understand why Eirik the Red’s ancient dream of luring newcomers to this magical place is finally materializing. Enjoy amazing Greenland holiday.
